Whipple Procedure (Pancreatic Cancer)

Pancreatic Cancer is one of the common cancers having poorest prognosis because most of the time it grows and spreads long before it start showing symptoms. The chance of survival in Pancreatic Cancer is very low. However, Whipples procedure, which is a complex surgery may extend life of patient and has possibility of curing the pancreatic / periampullary cancer as well. The chance of survival of Pancreatic Cancer patients varies depending upon the site and the stage of tumor but the patient survival definitely increases through Whipple procedure.

Dr Ashok Borisa who is one of the Gastrointestinal Surgeon in India, has performed many successful Whipple Procedure and given life to patients suffering from Pancreatic Cancer.

In Whipple procedure, a highly trained GI Surgeon removes the “head” (wide part) of the pancreas next and the duodenum (portion of the common bile duct, gallbladder, and sometimes part of the stomach). Then, surgeon rejoins the remaining intestine, bile duct, and pancreas.

Few patients may be eligible for a laparoscopic minimally invasive Whipple procedure, which is performed by highly trained GI Surgeon only who uses multiple small incisions rather larger single incision required in open surgery
